Tonbridge launch "Pay For A Player" scheme

THE Angel Aid game, to raise funds for Ryman League Premier Division newcomers Tonbridge Angels, raised a total of £1,250 for the Longmead Stadium club, writes Stephen McCartney.

The game, played in blistering heat in front of over 100 people saw Tony Dolby's Dynamos beat Mike Rutherford's Rovers 7-3.

A number of first team players turned out for a great occasion.  There was some good football played and Dolby's side raced into a 4-0 lead at half time.  After the break, however, the heat took it's toll on the players and each side scored three goals.

The funds were presented to club chairman Paul Dainty and have helped the club further in getting their finances back on an even keel, ahead of Saturday's Ryman League Premier Division opener against Eastleigh at Longmead Stadium.

Organiser Peter Ide, was pleased with the response of the Angel Aid game, and has now embarked on a new scheme called "Pay For A Player."

He said: "We were very happy, obviously it was a nice day.  We got over 100 people turning up and I think they had a good afternoon's football."

Explaining about his next venture, he added: "I've been speaking to Paul Dainty this week and manager Tony Dolby is talking to two players at the moment.

"One is ex-Conference, the other a useful player, but unfortunately the funds aren't there at the moment, so what we are looking to do is get the fans to start a special fund."

The club are trying to find a number of supporters willing to make a regular contribution to a fund which will go 100% towards at least one new player.

Flyers will be handed out at Saturday's game and the club hope the scheme will allow Dolby to build his squad, that has already seen two former Welling United players added.

Left-sided midfielder Tim Hambley joins on a three-month loan and defender John Farley has teamed up with most of last season's squad.
