Burnham brushed aside

Hambley nets brace for on-form Cugley's men

Folkestone Invicta enjoyed one of their most emphatic wins of the season as goals from Tim Hambley (2), Adam Flanagan and Allan Tait gave them a 4-0 victory at Burnham on Saturday afternoon.

The home side went into the game in confident mood after an unbeaten run of five matches which culminated in a 3-1 win away to leaders Tonbridge the previous Saturday.

But Invicta simply brushed them aside as Neil Cugley’s team struck three times in the first half and looked a class act at the Gore in front of a small home crowd.

Invicta opened the scoring after 13 minutes when centre half Adam FLANAGAN headed in Drew Watkins’ free kick from the left after a great delivery to the far post.

Striker James Dryden could have increased their lead on the quarter of an hour mark when he skipped past his man through the middle, but goalkeeper Steven Smith saved his subsequent shot.

Captain Paul Brett shot just over the bar for Burnham from the edge of the box after 22 minutes.

But Invicta increased their lead after 23 minutes with another good header from an accurate left wing cross as HAMBLEY converted Paul Lamb’s ball in.

It was 3-0 after 40 minutes when Hambley played Anthony Hogg through down the left hand side and top goalscorer TAIT converted in the middle.

Flanagan headed just wide when Lamb played the ball in from the left again after 42 minutes and Invicta were close again before half time when goalkeeper Smith came out to deny the in-coming Tait when the striker was played through the middle.

Invicta were rampant and scored the final and best goal of the game after 53 minutes when a flowing passing move involving the fit-again Mark Munday and Hogg resulted in Lamb playing another ball in from the left for HAMBLEY to add his second goal of the game.

The visitors could afford the luxury of introducing their three substitutes before the final 20 minutes.

With the game beyond them, Burnham stuck to their task and won their first corner of the game after 67 minutes when striker Michael Bartley cut in from the left, but goalkeeper Tony Kessell was able to touch the ball over.

Munday blocked Arron Lennon’s subsequent shot close to the Invicta line and both substitute Micheal Everitt and captain Scott Lindsey made goal line clearances as Burnham forced a second corner after 73 minutes.

Invicta were close again in the 90th minute when a Hogg shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected for a corner.

There were bookings for Burnham’s Brett (foul on Tait after 57 minutes), substitute Terry Davies (dissent after 79 minutes) and Adam Logie (foul on Hogg after 84 minutes) and for Invicta’s Flanagan (foul on Bartley after 46 minutes).
