Fans favourite Sykes plays Darts for last time

DARTFORD manager Tommy Sampson has spoken exclusively to www.kentishfootball.co.uk to announce Paul Sykes will play his last game for the club on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Sampson has revealed the shocking news that will be a major blow to fans of the Southern League Division One East club, as the 27-year-old former Margate striker - who can easily slot in as a central defender - wears the white shirt for the last time in the FA Trophy first round tie at Redbridge.

And Sampson wants all travelling fans to give their favourite player the send off he deserves.

Sampson announced: "Paul Sykes will be playing his last game for Dartford on Saturday as he has found it increasingly difficult with work commitments and a new addition to his family."

Sykes has found it tough to juggle a life that consists of looking after his young son Thomas, spending time with wife Carly and making the 75-mile trip from his home between Dover and Hythe training twice a week in Crayford and Gravesend and working as a milkman, which involves getting up much earlier than most people, and playing for the Darts.

Sampson added: "I don't want Paul to go and he doesn't want to really, but his life, family and health comes first.

"He gets very tired and he leaves with my best wishes and I have spoken to a couple of clubs and he will be sorely missed."

Sampson, who is sad to see the player leave the Darts, will remain friends with the player, admitted he will be an asset to any club he signs for, but prospective managers have to understand his family life and job may hinder his training commitments, but as all Darts fans know, he will always give 100% during matches.

"He will be a great addition to any club and it doesn't matter where he goes.  He can play in the Southern, Ryman or Kent League but he has to train nearer to his home.

"He is a lovely lad who always did his best for us.  Unfortunately he never had a real injury free run and it was my intention to turn him into a centre half.

"I understand his family life and well being comes first.

"I hope the fans will shake his hand on Saturday as he has been terrific at times for us.  However, it has been difficult for him to keep himself fit, and it's taken it's toll.

"He will always be welcomed back and everyone at the club will have time for him."

Sampson will wait until Saturday before announcing Sykes' sad departure to the rest of the squad, added:  "He has helped Dartford struggle to stay alive, he is a fantastic guy and I can only wish him well - he goes with my blessing."
