Depleted Chatham win at Enfield

Division One East
Neil Sanders reports
Enfield 0
Chatham Town 2 Denness 34
Billinness 74

Although missing several players through injury and suspension, as well as manager Steve Binks through illness, Chatham completed the league double with a comfortable 2-0 win, writes Neil Sanders.

A important result with the two teams above them in the league battling out a draw, and both teams below also gaining away wins.

Rob Denness had the first shot of the game after two minutes, which Enfield keeper Lee Robinson saved, but immediately had to be substituted due to a knee injury.

The home side's only clear chance of the half came after 10 minutes when Louis Green saved a shot from Jamie Abbott, and was glad to find the rebound coming straight back to him via an Enfield knee.

The rest of the first period belonged to Chatham with Denness and Billenness causing numerous problems for the E's defence, and going close on several occasions.  At times, their captain Kevin Kilroy seemed to be the only thing holding Chats at bay.

The opening goal eventually came after 34 minutes with a sublime piece of skill from Denness. He turned his opponent inside out before unleashing a curling shot into the top corner from just outside the 18 yard box.

Enfield improved in the second half and their closest effort came on the hour mark. Matt Solly showed the value of having a man on the post, by clearing a goalbound header off the line. E's main threat Danny Clarke, was well marshalled by the Chatham defence, with Andy Boyle and Matt Bourne hardly losing an aerial challenge all afternoon.

In the final quarter Chatham took control again and scored a deserved second goal with 15 minutes remaining.  Denness and Billenness combined again, with the former flicking on for the latter to bury a low shot inside the far post. Enfield substitute Eric Manangu did hit the bar with a mis-hit cross in the last minute, but the result was not in doubt by then.
