Margate sign giant goalkeeper

CHRIS KINNEAR has reacted to Margate's 6-0 home thrashing by Grays Athletic by signing giant Icelandic international goalkeeper Olafur Gottskalksson.

Kinnear snapped up the veteran 6ft 4in keeper who had been training with Championship new boys Queen's Park Rangers and threw him straight in at the deep end in their 2-1 Nationwide South victory against Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.

The arrival of Gottskalksson, who has also played for his country at basketball, signals the start of a campaign by Kinnear to strengthen his squad.

The long-serving Margate boss has also been boosted by news that the go-ahead for the club's new £11 million stadium will soon be given.

"It has been virtually impossible to attract new players to the club because they feared we would go under," he said.

"But now we can really offer them a future and hopefully we have done enough to persuade people to come and join us."
