Work begins to bring Stones back home

Tuesday 23rd January 2007
Work on Maidstone United Football Club's new stadium has started today.

Stones chairman Mr Paul Bowden-Brown watched as preparatory works got under way at the site off James Whatman Way.  Subject to signing a mortgage agreement tomorrow, he will start the process of organising the power to the site, getting the soil tested for the pitch and assessing the drainage and foundations.

Once that work is completed the first phase of the development will start with the construction of a new clubhouse and infrastructure for the car park.

Discussions are still ongoing with an investor who has asked for more time to complete their feasibility study of the potential business income that could be generated over the medium to long term.

Mr Bowden-Brown told www.maidstoneunited.co.uk: "We have had very positive discussions with the potential new investor, who is happy to proceed once they get the go-ahead from their advisors.

"My problem is that our club cannot wait any longer, so I have made the decision to proceed alone for now. “If the investor, or any other interested parties wants to get involved, they do in the knowledge that work has begun and that we are bringing football home to Kent's county town."
