White brings in Dagenham striker to give Dover the cutting edge

Friday 12th January 2007
Matthew Batt has joined Dover Athletic as caretaker-manager Terry White's first signing, writes Justin Allen. The striker has joined the club on a dual registration basis - meaning he is still a registered Dagenham & Redbridge player, but eligible to play for Whites too.

White explained to  www.doverathletic.com :  "Matthew comes to us on recommendation from Dagenham manager John Still. We needed to bring in someone who could fill the void left in our squad by Chris Chase's departure.

"We're going to take a look at Matthew here and see how things go. Hopefully, he can add something to the team.

"Our priority remains a creative midfield player and we're currently working on a number of things to get that area covered.

"It's not proving easy to find players at the moment. I could easily go out and sign players, but we're not going to bring someone in for the sake of it.

"We need to sign the right kind of player - one that will improve our squad."

Matthew, who has been excelling for Daggers' Academy side, was an unused substitute for Dagenham last Saturday, when they beat Woking 3-2 at Victoria Road.

Wild rumours suggesting Whites have or are signing Will Graham from Ramsgate are nonsense.

White laughed: "Not sure where that one has come from. If I'd signed him or wanted to sign him, I think I'd know about it."

Meanwhile, Chris Chase was released from his contract at Dover Athletic by mutual consent, earlier in the week.

Chris was not able to attend training sessions due to work or demonstrate his 100 per cent commitment to Dover Athletic.

Chairman Jim Parmenter told www.doverathletic.com : "We wish Chris the very best for the future. Unfortunately, he was not able to show his commitment and we need players who can.

"Terry White is working on a number of irons we have in the fire - and are hoping to boost our squad soon."

Matthew Clements has written a preview to Dover’s next two home games, against Molesey tomorrow and Croydon Athletic on Tuesday night (7:45pm).

Whites have played 21 of the 42 league games in Ryman One South this season and sit six points off the top with two games in hand.

After being taught a lesson in taking your chances at the right times last Sunday at Champion Hill, Terry White's team face a crucial spell of games that are more than winnable but easy to slip up in.

Dover's players should know from last season that Molesey and Croydon Athletic are not sides that hand you points on a plate too often.

The Moles may have done so in the first game of the season, when their captain crazily gave Whites two penalties in the first half via handballs, but five games lost in 19 matches shows that the team from the Herds Renault Stadium are not a pushover.

When I consider Molesey and their squad, one name will always spring to mind.
Phil Ruggles is once again the Moles top scorer, though he is likely to be disappointed with only six goals from the 18 games he has played in.

However, he is always a danger and could quite easily have scored twice in the opening 20 minutes versus Dover in August but, as we know all too well, you have to take your chances when presented.

A lack of goals has been the problem for Molesey this season. Only Ruggles and James Rose have hit the net more than twice in the league.
In fact, non-league legend and Molesey goalkeeper Chuck Martini is joint-third with two goals!

Molesey will be very fresh for their trip to Crabble, having played just once since Saturday 16 December.

Their last two league games have been 1-1 home draws against Chatham Town and Walton Casuals.

Their manager Steve Beeks is able to welcome back Jay Richardson, Steve Brown, Warren Burton and James Rose from injury.

Whites, on the other hand, have a number of problems with injuries and suspensions. Club captain Lee Spiller is suspended for the match and is also carrying a groin injury. Tommy Tyne is still a week away from selection.

The major blow this week has been an injury to James Dryden, who impressed caretaker boss Terry White with his performance and goal at Dulwich.

White said about Dryden: "He's probably no better than 50/50 to play on Saturday, which is a blow."

Another forward, Bradley Spice is a doubt after being stretchered off at Dulwich.

The former Sittingbourne player is said to be 80/20 on to start. Both Dryden and Spice will be tested on Saturday.

Terry White spoke to Justin Allen about his efforts in the transfer market this week: "I've been very busy trying to get players into the club. I've spoken to between 10 and 15 managers this week looking for a creative goalscoring midfielder. They start laughing because they're like gold dust.

"You either look for somebody who's not getting into a team playing at a higher level or you take a chance on somebody who's got a few goals in a lower standard.

White also spoke about new signing Matthew Batt: "He's signed dual-registration for us. Dagenham don't operate with a reserve team so it's an ideal chance for him to get a few games under his belt.

"I wouldn't say I've brought in Matt to replace Chris Chase, purely because he's a different kind of player. Chris couldn't commit himself. He has a problem travel-wise and we all felt he should pursue other avenues. I feel that both parties have approached it in the right way.

"Matt has had one training session. Unfortunately we haven't been able to get on the pitch this week. We didn't get a chance to have a proper look at him. The weather's been pretty poor this week."

Looking ahead to Tuesday evening, in form Croydon Athletic come to town.
The Surrey side have had a difficult season, having to dismantle their squad shortly before Whites' visit to their stadium in November, when Dryden and Craig Cloke secured three points in a 2-0 win.

Out have gone former Bromley forwards Charley Side, Wade Falana and Adolph Amoako since the beginning of November.

However, league pace-setters Dulwich found out to their cost recently that Croydon's team has not been too badly affected.

Former Margate and AFC Wimbledon midfielder Gareth Graham pulls the strings in midfield for the Rams, whilst Moses Ademola has been hitting the net. The team are unbeaten since 14 December. Kingstonian were dispatched 3-1 last Saturday.

Croydon are a club built by their supporters, quite literally. Their ground was built by fans with help from local companies and whilst their fanbase is minimal, they are a community club with potential.

On the footballing side, the Rams are creeping up on the play-off spots. They lie in sixth place, six points behind Dover with a game in hand. That in itself shows the importance for Whites to at least not lose on Tuesday evening. Three points would almost see off Croydon as a threat to Dover's league position.

A surprise package in this season's title race could come from the likes of Croydon, Met Police, Leatherhead and Hastings but a four-horse race seems to be forming should the top sides stay consistent.

As we have seen before, there is no such thing as a certainty at this level. Points have to be fought for and the likes of Molesey and Croydon are experts at doing so to keep themselves away from the danger zone.

A positive response to Sunday's defeat is required from players and supporters alike in the next five days. It is the key part of the season and an exciting run-in could be on the cards.

The reason Whites won their games at Molesey and Croydon in fairly comfortable fashion earlier this season was the crucial 2nd goal. The ability to score this goal is likely to define Dover's season.
