We're going to Eastleigh to win, says Dover Athletic boss Chris Kinnear

Tuesday 30th April 2013
DOVER ATHLETIC boss Chris Kinnear says his side will play their normal game when they travel to Eastleigh for the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South play-off semi-final first leg tonight.

The Crabble outfit finished their campaign in third-place and will have to get past three play-off games if they are to join champions Welling United – and Dartford - in the Conference Premier next season.

Dover Athletic travel to Hampshire to play the first leg on Tuesday night, before playing the second leg at Crabble next Saturday, before contesting the final against either Salisbury City or Chelmsford City.

“We’ve only lost one game in seventeen since we’ve been there, so we’ve got to be more than pleased with that,” said Kinnear.

“Well, it’s like every game we go into. We’re going there to try to win the game. We’ve had two very good away results and there’s no reason…

“Eastleigh are a very good side. We’re going to go there and try to win the game as we do every other game.”

When asked how he will treat the two-legged affair, the former Margate boss replied, “You’ve got to try and do as well as you can in both of the games. We always try to win every game so there will be no holding out so we get them at home.

“We’ll play our normal way and hopefully that will be good enough.”

Kinnear is happy to have home advantage for that all-important second leg.

“We’ll probably get more gate,” he said. “If it was a Tuesday night at Dover we’d probably wouldn’t but next Saturday, it’s a bank holiday weekend. I would imagine we’d get quite a lot of people to watch it.

“It should be quite good. Our home supporters have been very supportive when I’ve been there so it would be great that we can go back there and all give it a go really.”

Play-off games are nerve-jangling affairs and Kinnear hopes his side continue with their consistent form since his return to the club.

“We’ll just take it as two games. Our form hasn’t been up and down, it’s been very consistent. We’ve lost one game in seventeen so we should be confident.

“The last two games we’ve played really well so we should be confident, so hopefully it’s a case of the best team win and we’re the best team.

“We’ve got to get past Eastleigh really. I mean they’ll be thinking they’ve got a very, very good chance, so we have to get past them and not worry who gets through to the final.

“It’s very exciting for everybody. We’re very pleased we’re in the play-offs, there’s no doubt about that.  The supporters enjoy it. It’s exciting if you get through the play-offs. It’s more exciting than winning the league just in an one-off over the season because the last game really is an anti-climax.  Saying that, I’d rather win the league!”

Kinnear added: “It has been enjoyable. I’ve got to say the lads have stood up to the pressures of being near the top of the table.”
