We need to keep in contention for a play-off place, says Welling star Jamie Day

Friday 28th January 2011
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he wants his players to forget about their off-the-field issues and to clinch a Blue Square Bet South play-off place at the end of the season, writes Stephen McCartney.

Midfield play-maker Day should be awarded manager-of-the-year award for the way he and his players have conducted themselves with the club’ much-publicised problems, which included well-wishers paying off the club’s £60,000 unpaid tax bill and Day being suffocated by a transfer embargo, which forced Day to have 15 other players to pick from all season.

The Wings are sitting in the bottom play-off position in fifth place and travel to Dorchester Town, who are in the bottom five with 20 points from 21 games, tomorrow.

Welling are one of eight clubs vying to clinch the title and after three straight wins at the turn of the New Year, they suffered defeats to Thurrock and Dover Athletic, but they bounced back with a 1-0 win away to second-from-bottom side Boreham Wood in midweek to boost confidence going into tomorrow’s game.

Day said: “It will be a tough game for us after a good win in the week, but hopefully we can get another three points and get another run of games, which can keep us in contention for a play-off place.”

And with eight games scheduled for February, including next Tuesday’s Kent Senior Cup tie away to Ryman Leaguers Whitstable Town and a London Senior Cup tie against Thamesmead Town later on in the month, Day added:
“There are a lot of games coming up so we need to get as many points as possible.”
