We must match Whitstable’s enthusiasm to lift Cup, says Ford

Tuesday 14th April 2009

WELLING UNITED boss Andy Ford says his side needs no motivating ahead of the Kent Senior Cup Final against giant killers Whitstable Town on Thursday night, writes Stephen McCartney.

Whitstable Town, who secured their Ryman League Division One South status on Easter Saturday, have knocked out three higher league sides en-route to the Park View Road showpiece final.

Tonbridge Angels, Ebbsfleet United and Bromley have all been defeated by Marc Seager’s giant-killers, and Ford, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk knows respect has to be given to a Whitstable side that play two divisions lower than the Wings.

“I think everybody’s going to think that we’ll naturally just turn up,” said Ford, whose side have kept two clean sheets over the Easter period against Thurrock (0-0) and Fisher Athletic (5-0).

“If you get to any Cup Final you’ve deserved it. I went and watched them against Bromley and they’re a hungry, hard working side that are enthusiastic.

“I shouldn’t have to motivate people coming into a Cup Final. I’d be very surprised if I’ve got to do too much motivating on the day.

With Blue Square South side Welling United clear favourites, Ford doesn’t want his side to lose to a Whitstable side playing in their first ever Kent Senior Cup Final.

“If we take it too lightly, like other teams, Ebbsfleet, Tonbridge and Bromley, we’ll come unstuck," he warned.

Goalkeeper Charlie Mitten, who is currently nursing a hamstring injury, is cup-tied.

Meanwhile, admission prices for the final have been confirmed as being £9 (adults), £5 (concessions) and £3 (under 16s).
