Welling United boss Jamie Day unveils his first summer signing

Thursday 15th May 2014
WELLING UNITED manager Jamie Day has unveiled his first summer signing, bringing forward Charlie Penny to the club from neighbours Millwall.

Penny, 19, who spent time on loan at Ryman Premier League Wealdstone last season, will join the Wings on a permanent basis with effect from July 1 and goes straight into manager Jamie Day’s first-team squad for the new Conference Premier campaign.

Delighted Wings boss Day told www.wellingunited.com: “Charlie is a young player who we have monitored over the last few seasons and we acted quickly when he became available.

“He has shown he can score goals, and he also helped Wealdstone win promotion while on loan last season so has experience in non-league circles.

“He wants to listen and develop which is another reason for signing him.

“We know that he will fit in well with the boys so I am really looking forward to working with Charlie next season.”

Penny, who signed his first professional contract with Millwall last summer, did not make a first-team appearance at The New Den.

Meanwhile, Joe Healy’s infamous strike against Grimsby Town in December has been voted goal of the season at the National Game Awards this week.

Healy’s strike became an overnight Youtube sensation with worldwide coverage.

Meanwhile, Park View Road will stage the Hospitals Charity Cup Final between Phoenix Sports and Sutton Athletic on Friday, 16 May (7:30pm kick-off).
