Welling United boss Jamie Day makes double swoop

Friday 05th July 2013
WELLING UNITED manager Jamie Day has completed a double signing ahead of their opening game tomorrow.

The Wings kick-off their pre-season campaign at home to their championship neighbours Charlton Athletic at 3pm, before welcoming Millwall next Tuesday and Leyton Orient on Friday 12 July.

The Conference Premier side have signed ex-Arsenal midfielder Callum Webb and Swedish-born defender Doug Bergqvist, 20.

Bergqvist joins on a season-long loan from League Two outfit Exeter City,
after leaving Aldershot Town at the end of last season.

No stranger to Park View Road, Bergqvist was previously sent-off against the
Wings while on loan at Farnborough.

Day told www.wellingunited.com: “We’ve known about Doug for a few years as he has been on loan at Farnborough before.

“We knew that he was going to join Exeter and we’re delighted that they
agreed to let him join us on loan immediately to get some games under his
belt at Conference Premier level to help continue his development.

“I’m pleased to get him on board.”

Webb previously featured for Arsenal at under-18 level and then, after a
trial at Norwich City last summer, linked up with Bishop’s Stortford.

Bishop’s Stortford will be playing in Conference South this season after a couple of season’s in Conference North.

Day said: “He was at Arsenal as a scholar but he dropped out and went to
Bishop’s Stortford.
“I played with him in a tournament during the summer and thought he would be a good addition squad-wise.

“He can play either as one of the three in midfield or as a wide man in a
three-man attack, so he gives us options and is an excellent ball player.”
