Welling United sign winger Anthony Cook

Tuesday 02nd July 2019

WELLING UNITED manager Mark Goldberg has unveiled the signing of winger Anthony Cook.

The 29-year-old was part of Bromley’s Conference South title winning campaign under Goldberg in 2015 and jumped at the chance to re-join his old manager at Park View Road.

Cook also had two spells at Ebbsfleet United, tasting promotion from the Conference South for a second time in 2017.

Cook spent last season at Dulwich Hamlet but decided that he couldn’t commit to Gavin Rose’s new training regime at the fellow Vanarama National League South club.

“When Dulwich decided to switch to morning training it meant that I would not be able to commit to their new schedule,” Cook told www.wellingunited.com.

“I then spoke to a few club’s but as soon as I spoke to Mark, having played under him and winning this league before, it was a no-brainer.

“I already know the majority of the boys in the squad and a lot of us have played against or with each other so I think that will help us gel naturally.

“Most players in the team have been involved in promotion pushes so are used to being successful.  I think that will definitely help us this season.

“My aim is to bring goals to the team this season, either scoring or making them and playing for management, coaches and players that know what I’m good at makes coming to Welling a no-brainer.”

Welling United, whom train in the evening as a part-time side, open their pre-season campaign with a trip to Isthmian League Premier Division side Margate on Saturday 6 July (15:00).

On Cook’s arrival to Park View Road, first team coach Hugo Langton said: “What a guy he is both on and off the pitch.  His experience, his ability and his traits as a person will be huge assets I hope for this season.

“He can change games with top decision making and both Mark and I are glad to be working with him again.”

Cook joins Goldberg and Langton, as well as left-back Joe Anderson, centre-half Rob Swaine and striker Bradley Goldberg, who all played a major part in landing Bromley’s first league title in 54 years when they were all together at Hayes Lane.

Meanwhile, French winger Nassim L'Ghoul, 21, who made 25 appearances for Welling United under Steve King last season, has signed a two-year contract at Vanarama National League side Dover Athletic.
