We haven't won anything yet, admits Whitstable chairman

Monday 26th February 2007

Whitstable Town chairman Tony Rouse has warned against any complacency creeping into the ranks as they prepare for two big cup games this week, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Belmont Road club, unbeaten in their 21 league games, are on course of cinching their first ever Kent League title as they have a 13 point lead on Thamesmead Town with eleven games remaining.

They club have tasted defeat on just two occasions this season, losing to Ryman Premier League title challengers Margate in the FA Cup and to Sussex County League minnows Oakwood in the FA Vase.

Whitstable Town welcome local rivals Faversham Town on Tuesday night in the quarter-finals of the Kent League Cup before Southern Amateur League side West Wickham visit The Belmont on Saturday for a place in the Kent Senior Trophy up for grabs.

But with such a professional minded manager in Marc Seager at the club, that professionalism is also in the boardroom as Mr Rouse admits the club hasn’t won anything yet despite their unbeaten run.

“Our manager Marc Seager has the player’s feet firmly on the ground, and at Whitstable we always say “one game at a time”, which is how our season has progressed so far,” he told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.

“The last thing we want is the players believing in their own press. There is a lot of talk around the Kent League clubs saying that the only team who can stop Whitstable gaining promotion to the Ryman League is Whitstable themselves.

“Well let me add a word of caution and remind everyone just what position Maidstone were in December last season.

“They were well off the pace with Beckenham away at the top seemingly with one hand on the title only for Maidstone to pip them to it.”
