Treble chasing West Wickham emulate Ipswich Town by winning prestigious Cup - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Tuesday 17th April 2007

Southern Amateur League side West Wickham are trying to follow in the footsteps of Kent League side Whitstable Town - by trying to win the treble this season, writes Stephen McCartney.

West Wickham’s Kent Senior Trophy run was ended by eventual winners Whitstable Town in the semi-finals, losing 6-5 on penalties after the game at The Belmont finished goal-less after extra time.

But Alan Cotton’s side won the AFA Senior Cup Final on Saturday when they beat Old Hamptonians 4-0.

“This is West Wickham’s second cup final win this season and it was an historic performance as this year is the centenary of the Amateur Football Alliance,” Cotton explained in an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk today.

A big crowd watched the game at Old Parkonians ground and West Wickham quickly raced into a
3-0 lead through Jay Askew, Jon Waite and Ashley Everett.

But ten-man Wickham added a fourth from the penalty spot when Waite netted from the penalty spot after Everett had been fouled inside the box.

Skipper Adam Freeman collected the hugely prestigious trophy with Waite collecting the man-of-the-match trophy.

“One of the most famous names of this historic Cup is Ipswich Town, who started life in the Southern Amateur League,” said a proud Cotton.

“They are joined by many more famous names and West Wickham are now on it four times.

“We are now going for the treble with seven games left to play and although this is a tall order, we will be striving right to the last game to make history again.”
