There's no point holding back at Carshalton Athletic, says Whitstable Town boss Nicky Southall

WHITSTABLE TOWN manager Nicky Southall says he wants his side to spring a FA Carlsberg Trophy shock at struggling Carshalton Athletic on Saturday.

The Oystermen travel to Surrey to take on Ryman Premier League opposition after already beating Sittingbourne, Potters Bar Town and Hythe Town en-route to the Third Qualifying Round.

This will be the club’s sixth game in The FA Carlsberg Trophy this season because Southall’s men needed two games to see off Potters Bar Town and Hythe Town.

Whitstable Town lie in the bottom six in the Ryman League Division One South table, having collected four wins and five draws from their 15 league games.

The Robbins go into the game sitting in the bottom two in the league above, having collected only two wins and three draws from their sixteen league games.

Carshalton Athletic have suffered eleven league defeats and former Gillingham ace Southall is plotting a Trophy shock.

“Saturday’s Trophy game against higher league opposition in Carshalton is a huge yard marker to gage how far we’ve come this season,” said Southall, 41.

“Looking back at our current form I think we’ve lost three in 13 games so yes we should and shall go to Carshalton full of confidence as it’s a free run at this game and the rewards are massive if you can get through as then the so-called big boys enter the competition in ernest.”

Clubs at Conference Premier level enter The FA Trophy at the next stage off the competition – and Southall, who has guided the club to their best ever FA Trophy campaign, doesn’t want their epic run to end.

“We have got to approach this game in a real positive frame of mind and to have a go at them,” said Southall, who has played in all four divisions of League football during his playing career.

“There’s no point holding back and thinking “I wish or If I could have been a little more courageous against a team from a league above us” as for me personally I’ve been on the end of cup shocks and I’ve caused cup shocks in my career so I will hopefully bring all my experience and knowhow to the table to try to settle my players ahead of this huge cup game for the town of Whitstable and it’s supporters.”
