Sunderland fan raises funds for the families of Newcastle fans killed in Ukraine plane tragedy

A Sunderland football supporter has opened an online fund raising website to raise funds for the families of the two Newcastle supporters who were murdered on Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 which was shot down from the sky over Ukraine last Thursday.

Newcastle United fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney were both making their way to New Zealand to watch the club’s pre-season tour but sadly they never returned home.

Sunderland fan Gary Ferguson wanted to raise £100 but at the time of writing this article at 18:45, he has raised £19,461, with 2,142 people donating funds in one day.

“We may be Sunderland fans, who traditionally have deep rivalry with Newcastle, but there are things far more important than any football games,” he said on the fundraising page.

“The incredibly sad news that has emerged this week about two Newcastle fans who have passed has left us all shocked and deeply saddened.

“Donating here will help pay for a floral tribute to those fans and to unity between the two clubs.

“Any extra money will be donated to a charity that has yet to be decided.

“Thank you for your time, effort and donations.

“RIP to John Alder and Liam Sweeney, who were both far too young.”

One Sunderland fan added: “Great to see supporters from not only Sunderland and Newcastle donating to something which touches all football people.

“We may be fierce rivals, but at the end of the day, we’re all United in the sad loss of not only two northeast lads, but everyone else who lose their lives on this flight.

“Long may our rivalries continue on the football pitch, long may our respect for all concerned by foremost.  A proud mackem.”

Liz Luff, who looks after the PR for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, was touched by this fantastic gesture.

“Hearing about the loss of life on MH17 was a shock,” she wrote.

“But knowing two of the passengers were ‘ours’ was greatly upsetting.

“I never had the privilege of meeting John or Liam but those who did talk about their great passion for football.

“Everyone involved in organising this collection, and everyone who has donated, is a credit to the game.

“The amount of money donated is quite overwhelming. In fact, it’s stunning.”

Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of John and Liam.
