Striker Watts parts company with Fisher Athletic

Sunday 03rd December 2006

Fisher Athletic goalscoring legend Steve Watts has left Fisher Athletic by mutual consent. The striker brought a successful second stint at the club to an end on Saturday.

In that time Wattsy, as he was affectionally known to the Fisher fans, helped Fisher win the London Senior Cup 2004/06 - 2005/06, Ryman League Cup 2005/06, Ryman Premier League Play-off promotion 2005/06 and the Southern League Eastern Division Championship 2004/05.

In just two and a half seasons at the club Watts scored an incredible 95 goals for the Fish. In his first season Watts bagged 48 goals in the Southern League Eastern Division and unsurprisingly finished the leagues top scorer.

A year later Watts fired Fish to promotion as he chipped in with 37 goals winning the Ryman Player of the year award in the process.

Watts cemented his legendary status in the 2005/06 Ryman Premier Division play offs, scoring the winner in the semi final against AFC Wimbledon and a 30 yard curler just four days later in the final.

New Fisher manager Sami Muduroglu explained why Watts cannot commit to full-time football.

He told www.fisherathletic.co.uk: “Steve has been a fantastic servant to this football club. Everyone at the club is extremely sorry to see him go but it was a personal decision made by Steve, not the club.

“Steve feels that at 29, he needs to concentrate on other directions in his life and could no longer commit to full time football.

“I respect that decision and I hope the supporters can understand Steve's reasons as well.

“His been brilliant for this football club and everyone at Fisher wishes Steve all the best with his future endeavours.'

Muduroglu, who replaced former Tottenham star and Billericay Town manager Justin Edinburgh at the helm a couple of weeks ago, revealed he is currently in talks to bring in two new players.

He said: “We have a very capable squad of 18 but I still feel there is room for improvement.

“We need to make up some ground at the top and I'll be looking to strengthen in the coming weeks. We're in talks with two players at the moment and they are progressing well.

“Also I've been very impressed with the Academy side, we have 15 extremely talented individuals coming through and I'll be looking to blood some of them as the season progresses.”

Fisher Athletic, sixth in the Nationwide Conference South table, welcome Bedford Town to Champion Hill next Saturday.
