Some of our players have got to start to improve or we’ll have to do something about it, says Cugley

FOLKESTONE INVICTA boss Neil Cugley was in unusually subdued mood when he reflected on Invicta’s 2-1 defeat by Hythe Town at Reachfields Stadium on Boxing Day.

“I felt we were the better side by some way and didn’t think they’d ever score,” Cugley told www.folkestoneinvicta.co.uk.

“Both sides were poor up front and the centre halves on both sides were well on top.  With a couple more players we wouldn’t have lost a game like that.

“When you get a big crowd (1,022) they deserve far better entertainment than they got.

“The side we had a year ago would have won that game easily, but we still deserved something out of it.
Some of our players have got to start to improve or we’ll have to do something about it. Nat Blanks had an excellent game and Phil Stevenson also did well, but we needed a bit more quality in the final third.

“We’ll just roll on and get ready for Saturday though.”

when asked about bringing loan players to the club, Cugley replied: You don’t get loan players for nothing and we’ve got no money to bring anyone on.”

For tomorrow’s trip to Eastbourne Town, Cugley doesn’t anticipate any major changes though Ryan Philpott, who showed a refreshing willingness to shoot on sight after coming on for the final 20 minutes against Hythe Town, may have won his place back in the starting line-up.

The Sussex side drew 2-2 at Cheriton Road earlier in the season, but are currently five places below Invicta at 18th in the Division One South table.

“They’re a better side than that with some good players to call on,” said Cugley.

“And they had a good win (2-1 away at Burgess Hill) on Boxing Day, so it will not be easy. The pitch is usually heavy down there and it doesn’t look like the weather’s going to improve much before the weekend.”

After the trip to The Saffrons, Folkestone face Kent rivals Whitstable Town at Cheriton Road on New Year’s Day – a side likely to include former Invicta stalwarts Micheal Everitt and James Dryden, kick-off 3pm.
