MARGATE have confirmed that central defender Ben Swift, 21, has signed a new contract to stay at Hartsdown Park.

Joint-manager Mike Sandmann told www.margate-fc.co.uk:  “Steve Brown and I are really pleased Ben Swift has decided to re-sign, he had options from clubs in the league above but wanted to be part of what we are trying to build here.”

“Ben is still only 21, so he’s another young player mixed in with the experience we already have at the club.

“Ben’s a good defender who will continue to improve the more games he plays. He took the opportunity given to him last season and remained a consistent in the side, until his injury late in the year.

“We are looking forward to getting started on his second and preparing for the upcoming season.”

Swift’s signing is another indication of the management duo’s ambition to inject younger players into an experienced squad.

Sandmann has popped along to the clubs under 23 trials last week and was happy with what he saw.

He said: “We have a lot of exciting young players who want to be a part of the club and this is evident from the recent Under 23s trials.

“Browny and I are looking forward to having these young, hungry players that just want to improve and come into our first team. If they’re good enough, then they’ll be given the opportunity.”
