ASHFORD UNITED manager Tommy Warrilow says his side are raring to go for tomorrow’s opening pre-season friendly at Rochester United.

“The result is always important to me regardless of whether it’s a friendly or a competitive match, but obviously the most important thing at the present time is to get minutes into the guys,” Warrilow told the club website.

“We haven’t played in a long while, match fitness will gradually come, but I think the squad is looking good.

“I’ll also be hoping to see us utilise the stuff we’ve been working on back at the training ground.  That’s the kind of stuff we need to begin executing ahead of the season in August.

“Games are coming thick and fast now, which is good for us to get to the level we need to reach, but all in all, it feels good to be back.”

Warrilow, meanwhile, has retained Tommy Fagg, Ben Gorham, Tariq Ossai, Tashi Kwayie, Jack Steventon, Jono Richardson, Luke Leppard, Josh Wisson, Jay May, Levi Gold, Bradley Simms and Johan Ter Horst.

“The matches will be invaluable to our preparation as players develop match fitness and tactical awareness,” Watson told the club website.

“Our opposition are all of an equivalent level or above in terms of league status, so it will be a competitive and a good gauge for where we are at.

“We plan to use the game time strategically to taper the number of minutes played by individuals in accordance with their need.

“As a management team, we have been generally pleased with the physical condition in which the players have returned.  In modern-day football, a strong baseline of fitness is even more important as the intensity of the game continues to increase in many respects.

“We are currently working with 20-22 players. They consist of players that have already signed and have been announced, some trialists and a few players who have progressed from the youth section of the club or under 23s.  Early exposure to the senior teams for the younger players is essential in their development.

“Our home ground has been greatly improved over the last few years and credit must go to all that have contributed to the words – not least the two pitches which have again had much investment and will be in great condition.”
