We've had a great start so we need to keep plugging away and keep our feet on the ground, says Sittingbourne boss Nick Davis

SITTINGBOURNE boss Nick Davis says he will keep his players’ feet on their ground after their great start to the season.

The Brickies travel to Horsham on Saturday sitting in the top five in the Bostik South table, with a playing record of four wins and three draws from their opening eight games.

They are only a couple of points adrift of league leaders Whyteleafe, ahead of their trip down to Lancing to tackle sixteenth-place Horsham, who have claimed seven points from six outings.

Reflecting on their 3-2 home win over VCD Athletic last weekend, Davis said: “We wasn’t at our best against VCD for sure and we were lucky to win the game.  For whatever reason, we just never showed up but managed to win, somehow!

“In all honesty, VCD caused us more problems than any other side this season by far.

“It makes it 10 from 12 points at home and we are going to need to continue that if we want to achieve what we believe we can.”

Sittingbourne took Vanarama National League side Dover Athletic to a penalty shoot-out on Tuesday night after a 2-2 draw in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup Second Round, although Chris Kinnear’s side, the holders, progressed 4-1 on penalties to reach the last eight.

“Against a full-time Dover side on Tuesday we were outstanding and should’ve won the game.  It wasn’t to be but we were back to our best, which was pleasing,” said Davis.

“We have come a long way from the summer when I had to rebuild from scratch and it’s the strongest squad I have known since my five years at Bourne.

“This has been without Bally and Miles (Laurence Ball and Miles Cornwell) for the majority, who are my two most experienced players and token signings, if you like.

“We have had a great start but we are only eight games in and anyone is capable of beating anyone on their day, so we need to keep plugging away and keep our feet on the ground.”
