We feel we can upset people on our day, says Sporting Club Thamesmead joint-manager Danny Joy

SPORTING CLUB THAMESMEAD joint-manager Danny Joy says he wants to progress on last season’s top-nine finish under Lee Hill.

The artist formerly known as Seven Acre & Sidcup have changed their name this season and they claimed their first win of the season by beating Eltham Palace 2-0 on Friday night, in front of 116 fans at Bayliss Avenue, but played a long-ball direct style of football.

The club are currently sitting in the bottom four in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division table with a 50% record from their opening two league games.

“We want to progress on last year,” said Joy, who jointly runs the side along with Ross Baker, who were together at Bexlians and Erith 147 Sports in the Kent County League.

“We’re new to the club, the club is going on a massive, massive change of direction quickly.

“We’ve brought in an under 21, we’ve got an under 18 this season that are all tied to the first team.

“Our aspirations for the season, we want to hold our own.  We feel we can upset people on our day, just be competitive. That’s what we’ve been asked to achieve. We want to progress on last year. If we can progress little by little every season then we’re doing our job.”

The Acre travel to Bridon Ropes tomorrow, a side that are a couple places higher than the Acre having collected four points from their three league outings.

“Always a tough place to go, lovely surface. After a game like that on Friday we’re going to have to give the boys a nice couple of day’s rest and hopefully we’ve got no walking wounded for Monday and just get a side on the pitch again and give us as much effort as they gave us on Friday night.

“We feel in this league everyone is capable of being beaten if you don’t work. Considering we’ve only been at the club six to eight weeks we’re very organised. Everyone knows their job but confidence is a big motivation and the boys are buzzing after Friday’s win.”
