Ramsgate unveil the signing of Nigerian striker Joseph Afusi

Friday 29th July 2011
RAMSGATE chairman Richard Lawson says his club will be a “force this season” after signing Nigerian born striker Joseph Afusi.

Only sixteen days after scoring the Gills’ goal in their pre-season friendly at Southwood, Afusi has signed for Ramsgate, whose management have decided that after a lackadaisical performance at Kent League side Lordswood, only scoring four goals in three games against teams from lower divisions, more experience was needed to bolster the young squad.

Afusi, 28, boats an impressive CV after spells in Portugal, Greece and Romania, and more recently of course was a trialist for Andy Hessenthaler at Gillingham, who will continue to monitor his progress with the Rams.

Afusi, who has played professionally in the top leagues in Portugal and Greece and for the past two seasons in Romania, playing against the likes of Steaua Bucharest and Unirea (who played Liverpool) will make his Ramsgate debut in a pre-season friendly against Thamesmead Town tomorrow.

He was impressed with the Rams when he played against them and makes no secret of his desire to move back into League Football.

Afusi holds a Level 2 coaching badge and is looking forward to meeting his new teammates and helping develop Ramsgate’s exciting crop of young players.

“I spent some time speaking to Jim Ward (manager) and we all agree that whilst our squad boasts some excellent players, some of the younger lads need a bit more time before they will make an impact,” said the Ramsgate chairman on www.ramsgate-fc.co.uk.

“This signing will show our supporters that we intend to be a force this season.  Joseph will be a real handful for defences and is a tremendous addition to our squad.”
