Pittaway: We want to take Sevenoaks Town up to a better level

Sunday 10th September 2006

A record breaking third successive win sent Sevenoaks Town into the unprecedented position of second in the Kent League table following their 1-0 victory at Erith Town yesterday.

Winning ugly, Sevenoaks Town’s joint-manager Bob Pittaway admitted afterwards that he wasn’t pleased with his side’s performance against the ten-man Dockers.

With so many involved having played for or managed both clubs, the game at the Erith Sports Stadium was almost a private family quarrel as the Greatness Park outfit moved within one point of leaders Faversham Town, having played a game more.

Frankie Whitehead scored the only goal of the game, flicking the ball into the corner of the net, following a corner from former Docker Matt Fagan.

“Although we got the three points, we showed our inexperience and our immaturity and we didn’t kill the game off in the first ten or fifteen minutes when he should have done,” Pittaway told www.sevenoakstownfc.org

“At the end of the day, yes, we do have to grind out results but I’m of the school where I like to play good football, I like to enjoy it. I like the players to enjoy it.

“I did enjoy the result, but we made hard work of it and after Tuesday night against Lordswood, winning 3-1, we cam down to earth with a bump and played at Erith’s level, and Erith are not a good side.

“Derek Moore and myself worked tirelessly through the summer to bring players in, and albeit I wish the players who were with us last season all the best, now we have got players who can actually play football and pass the ball.

“Although we are second in the table we are still looking for better players, still going to games and looking at players.

“This is because we want to take Sevenoaks Town to a better level. The club is geared up for it, certainly the management team is geared up for it and we want to go and win the league.

“We want to play at a higher level and I think the club and the town deserves that.”

Resurgent Sevenoaks, who average crowds of just 50, have to wait until Tuesday 26 September until their next match and should comfortably collect three points when whipping boys Sporting Bengal United visit Greatness Park.

“As far as I’m concerned, Bengal are a team in the Kent League and we are going to treat them as a good side and we are going to show them all the respect they deserve,” said the former Dartford coach.

“We are going to make sure that we give a disciplined performance and we play with a passion and a commitment and we are going to make sure that at the end of the day we get three points and if that takes us to the top of the table, all well and good.”
