Off-colour Sevenoaks go down at Whitstable

Sunday 17th December 2006

Crippled by injuries, stretched by suspensions and overtaken by work commitments, it was a depleted and sickly Sevenoaks Town side that travelled and lost 4-1 to unbeaten Whitstable Town yesterday.

But joint manager Derek Moore told www.sevenoakstownfc.org that he was pleased with the performance of his side at the Belmont.

He said: “We had four players drop out overnight, and another at lunchtime today. Tom Olsen was throwing up in the car park and Courtney Rayfield played despite a heavy dose of flu.

“Yet we did exceptionally well, especially Frankie Whitehead who was different class, and with a little more quality around the place we should have won.

“As it was, we were always going to be up against it and Whitstable were always going to have too much for us today.

“It was a magnificent game of football and great credit must go to the referee, Mr Mark Sage, who fully entered into the spirit and let the football flow despite some heavy tackles.

“It was a real man’s game today and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Whitstable will know they have been in a terrific match against a good team, whatever the score says!”

Local bragging rights are at stake when local rivals Tunbridge Wells visit Greatness Park on Boxing Day morning (11am).

“We will be going into the Boxing Day match with an injury list as long as your arm”, said Moore.

“But make no mistake we are desperate to win it. We are expecting a very tough match against an improving Tunbridge Wells team.

“There is a lot of local pride at stake and we are desperate to prove that the result at their place, when we absolutely stuffed them, was no fluke.”
