FA Cup run and winning the league for Maidstone United was one of the highlights of my career, says axed Sonny Miles

MAIDSTONE UNITED manager Jay Saunders has released two defenders as he prepares for life in the Vanarama National League South next season.

The Stones claimed the Ryman Premier League championship after finishing top of the pile on 98 points from 46 games.

Sonny Miles will not be given another crack at the rebranded Vanarama National League South, having played in that division for Tonbridge Angels under then manager Tommy Warrilow.

Miles is disappointed to have been released after just one season at the club and reflected on the club’s run to the FA Cup Second Round after beating League One side Stevenage in a replay at home in the First Round after a goal-less draw at Broadhall Way where fans packed the away end and sang their hearts out for 90 minutes.

He tweeted: “Just wanted to put on record and say I’ve had an amazing year at Maidstone.

“FA Cup (run) and winning league was one of (the) highlights of my career.

“Thanks to all the fans for your messages and support of the past year. One hell of a fan base – noise at Stevenage was unreal.

“All the best to Jay and the rest of the boys in the South.”

Phil Starkey, who joined the club from Ryman Premier League side AFC Hornchurch, has also been released.

Boss Saunders admitted to the club’s website that it was tough to release the pair after a title winning campaign.

He said: “This is one of the toughest jobs as a manager, especially when you’re dealing with a championship winning team and players who are still on a high from a fortnight ago.

“Sonny and Starks will be missed on and off the pitch. Both were popular characters around the club and I know supporters will join me in wishing them good luck for the future.”

Craig Stone, meanwhile, who was on loan from Dover Athletic, will not be returning to the Stones next season.
