Matata signs for his third Kent club

Sunday 17th December 2006

Tottenham based striker Walid Matata has signed for his third Kent club, having made his Ashford Town debut yesterday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The former Dover Athletic striker moved to nearest rivals Folkestone Invicta in the deal that took record breaking striker James Dryden in the opposite direction in December 2005.

But due to Folkestone Invicta’s much publicised financial issues Matata was released by Neil Cugley in November 2006 and signed briefly for Ryman Premier League side East Thurrock United.

Matata, 26, and a city banker, was awarded the man-of-the-match award despite Ashford Town losing 3-0 on his debut at Tooting & Mitcham United.

Ashford must surely climb the Ryman League Division One South table with the likes of Anthony Allman, Matt Carruthers, Simon Glover, Drew Watkins and Matata in their side.

The Homelands outfit are third from bottom and are just one point above the drop zone.

But they welcome league leaders Dulwich Hamlet to the Homelands next Saturday before travelling to Whyteleafe on Boxing Day.
