Lovell: We must kill teams off - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Monday 20th November 2006

Sittingbourne manager Steve Lovell is ruing squandered chances after his side picked up one point from their last two games, writes Stephen McCartney.

But the Welshman does not have any issues with performances from his side, especially as they are sitting in sixth place in the Ryman League Division One South table.

The Brickies travel to Walton Casuals on Tuesday night, a side that were beaten courtesy of Lee Browning’s strike on Halloween - the only goal of the game at a windy Bourne Park.

Lovell, though, feels his side deserved more than a point against Kingstonian on Saturday, a game that finished 1-1.

“We played very well,” Lovell said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk : “They had one attempt at goal, scored and we had all the game and at the moment we’re not having any luck in front of goal.

“We’re playing really well, especially against Cray and Kingstonian, which were probably the two best games of actual football, passing and play we’ve played all season.

“I’m not disappointed with the actual play - just finishing teams off.”

Ten-goal striker Andy Doerr will be drafted into the squad for tomorrow’s trip to Walton Casuals as he has now recovered from the ankle injury that kept him out of the last three games.

Lovell said: “Teams and individuals go through periods where you miss chances and opposition defenders deserve praise but we’re still playing well and we’ll start sticking the ball in the back of the net again and win games comfortably.”

When the Surrey side visited Bourne Park last month they were forced to shoot from distance in a game spoilt by the wind.

“The game we played at home was spoilt by the wind,” said Lovell. “We murdered them in the first half and they had the second half.

“We didn’t play particularly well and won it 1-0. If you don’t take your chances it gives the opposition confidence to get back into the game.”

Charlie Belcher (ankle ligaments) and James Campbell (calf) are causing Lovell concern at present.

But Lovell is pleased that his son Mark, and goalkeeper Steve Williams have rejected moves to Ramsgate, a side that are fifth (or joint-top) in the Ryman Premier League.

Lovell revealed: “Ramsgate came in for Mark and Steve but they decided to stay with us for the time being.

“I am hopeful of signing a goalkeeper this week. Steve is staying but I need to give him a rest.

“His ankle is a bit sore and he’s been playing the last couple of games with an Achilles problem.

“I’ve got to try to get non-contracted players as it’s easy to get them out of their clubs.”
