I will not risk long-term future of the club, insists Angels' chief

Mr Nick Sullivan, the chairman of Tonbridge Angels, insists he will not spend money that the club does not have, writes Stephen McCartney.

Expectations at the west Kent club have increased during this season as Tony Dolby’s men have produced the goods on the pitch.

Tonbridge led the Ryman Premier League table for three games in August and since then fans expect the side to maintain their place in the top positions.

But the Betterview Longmead Stadium outfit are competing against sides that are splashing the cash.

Tonbridge are currently in seventh place in the table with 27 points from their first 15 games - just seven points off top spot.

Writing in his programme notes last night Mr Sullivan explained the financial situation at the club.

He said: “Since our promotion to the Ryman Premier League the one thing that has surprised me most is the amount of clubs who are prepared to pay ridiculous sums of money for a short term gain with no long term solution.

“Our ambitions at the beginning of the season were to consolidate, giving us a platform to build on, but due to our excellent start to the season everyone’s expectations have become greater.

“I have said it before and I will say it again - we will support Tony (Dolby) to the maximum we are comfortable with and I will not put the club’s long-term financial future in jeopardy.”

Mr Sullivan added: “I am not being negative just realistic. We have come a long way in a short period of time and will continue to push the whole club forward.”
