It's good to have Morrish back, says Heaslewood - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Wednesday 10th January 2007
Adam Heaslewood, the player-assistant manager of Kent League side Slade Green, has told his side to avoid slipping up on a banana skin at Bearsted on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Green make their second trip to Honey Lane in Otham in seven days after last Saturday’s game was postponed.

“We know a little bit about the facilities that we have to face following our trip down there last Saturday,” Heaslewood said in an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“The referee was correct in his decision as the pitch was playable but the lines were not good enough.

”Their groundsman had tried to get the game on and both sides wanted to play the game, but the referee was right to call the game off.”

Bad weather has prevented the former Cray Wanderers midfielder to watch Saturday’s Kent Senior Trophy opponents, where a win will set up a home semi-final showdown with Sevenoaks Town.

Sevenoaks pulled off a shock result to knock Beckenham Town out – winning 4-3 on penalties after the game at Greatness Park finished 1-1 after extra time last night.

But Heaslewood, who started his playing career at Peterborough United, is not expecting an easy time against the Bears.

He said: “Definite banana skin.  We would have liked to have seen them play but they have not had a game since the 25th November.

“They are going to be up for it and it all depends what Slade Green team turns up.

“Will it be the one that has competed against the best sides in the Kent League or the team that has simply not performed in games?

“This is down to Danny (Evans), Silky (Andy Silk) and myself.  The atmosphere was spot on Saturday – all the lads wanted to play.”

Unbeaten Kent League leaders, Whitstable Town, are favourites to win the Kent Senior Trophy this season, as they welcome West Wickham to the Belmont in the semi-finals.

But Whitstable manager Marc Seager, who adopts a very professional attitude, will want to avoid falling to the amateur side, especially as they’ve knocked out two Kent League sides already, Herne Bay and Hythe Town.

But Heaslewood knows his side are just two wins away from reaching the final.

“As I said earlier, it all depends on our attitude, commitment as to how we approach this game,” he said.

“On our day we can compete and get results against the best sides at this level, we proved that against Thamesmead  Town.”

But playing in unfamiliar surroundings will be a leveller and Heaslewood has told his players what he expects.

He said: “I want them to compete for every ball and every tackle.  It will be a battle at times and it may not be possible to play the football.

“I am not insinuating that Bearsted are a side that play direct, but conditions can affect a game.”

Forward John Paul McKey, however, has been ruled out through suspension but striker Adam Morrish will play a key role having missed the past three months with a back injury.

“This is a massive boost for us,” said Heaslewood.  “He gives us a different dimension and has the ability to bring other players into the game.

”He is our main striker and not to have your main striker available for three months will make any team suffer.

”I strongly believe that if we can get Adam back to how he was playing before the injury it can make a big impact on our season.”
