It's about time we had some luck, admits Moore

Sevenoaks Town booked themselves a place in the last four of the Kent Senior Trophy last night, writes Stephen McCartney.

They defeated Beckenham Town 4-3 on penalties after the Greatness Park tussell finished all-square after extra time.

Frankie Whitehead opened the scoring for the home side but Jones Awuah hit back for Beckenham.

Beckenham missed their first two penalties, but Sevenoaks booked a trip to either Bearsted or Slade Green, who play each other at Honey Lane on Saturday, courtesy of converted spot-kicks from Paul Springett, Tony Atkins, Matt Fagan and skipper, Nick Reeves.

Sevenoaks’ joint-manager Derek Moore, meanwhile, felt it was about time that his side got some luck.

He told www.sevenoakstownfc.org:  “We earned the result tonight. Probably for the first time this season we got the rub of the green when it mattered.

“It was a very competitive match and I suppose for spectators an exciting game of football if not a pretty one.

“The difference between the two sides was that when we were playing with the wind we were trying to play a short game as against Beckenham’s approach which was a longer ball with a robust strike on the end of most attacks.

“It was great to see Frankie Whitehead on the score sheet again. Hopefully it will build his confidence for the future.

“We don’t score enough goals from set pieces either, but we put a lot of quality balls into the box tonight without quite getting on the end of them.”

Moore also highlighted the performance of defenders Darren Pearson, Nick Reeves and Tom Olsen.

“Tom has settled into first team football very well since joining from Dartford Reserves. He is a player we had been chasing for quite some time and he has made the transition very well. He is going to go on to be a very, very good player and hopefully his future lies with Sevenoaks.

“Jamie Williams was another hero, on the penalty shoot-out he made the all-important save from the second penalty which really set us up for the win.

“He is a lad who has come in to help us through a crisis and he has adapted well.

“Overall we deserved the win because we were good enough in the conditions and we now have to translate that performance into a win in the league on Saturday.”
