If we keep beating teams around us it puts us in a good position, says Welling boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he is relishing his side’s last remaining six games - and he hasn’t ruled out grabbing the league title, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings have defeated both Chelmsford City and Eastleigh in the last week and are in third place in the Blue Square Bet South table - six points adrift of leaders Braintree Town.

Welling are half-way through their big four games that can make-or-break their season.  They travel to sixth-placed Woking on Saturday - the Cards are five points adrift of the Wings - before welcoming second-placed Farnborough to Park View Road on 9 April.

Welling complete their league campaign with games against St Albans City, Thurrock, league leaders Braintree Town and Basingstoke Town.

“I’m pleased with the last four games,” said Day, who has scored four goals this season, although his partner in the middle of the park, Lee Clarke, has scored fourteen, including all four against Eastleigh on Tuesday night.

“We knew it’s going to be a massive six games coming up and to get as many points as we have is pleasing.

“We’ve got a big game on Saturday and another big game after that.

“We’ve got to keep on picking up wins and if we keep beating teams around us it puts us in a good position.”

When asked about clinching the title, against all odds, at the end of the season, Day said, “It’s difficult.  We’re on a good run.  I think Farnborough and Braintree are in a better position than we are as they’ve got a game in hand and they’ve got a few more points on the board than us but we’re going to have a go.

“We’ve put up a good old fight during the whole of the season, so we’ll carry that on right to the end.”

Meanwhile, Welling supporter Gary Hollland has brought back some fond memories, with an internet video of programmes, league tables and photographs from the club’s Southern League championship winning and Kent Senior Cup success of 25-years ago, which sealed the club’s status in the top flight of non-league football.

“It would be great if ex-Welling players knew about it, like Gary Abbott.” he said.
