Matt Fry is a quality defender and will bring a wealth of experience to our young team, says Herne Bay joint-manager John Embery

HERNE BAY have unveiled the signing of defender Matt Fry, 27.

Fry has a wealth of talent and experience and is a former professional footballer, having previously played for West Ham United, Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City, Dartford, Chelmsford City, Eastleigh, Braintree Town and York City.

Fry was born in Longfield, Kent, and was the product of Gravesend & Northfleet’s youth team before signing for West Ham United at the age of 11 and captained the team in 2008 before signing his first professional contract a year later.

However, Fry was forced to retire from professional football on medical advice and Herne Bay boss John Embery, who runs the team alongside Jermaine Darlington, has enticed him to Winch’s Field to play Bostik South East Division football on a part-time basis.

“Matt is a quality defender and will bring a wealth of experience to our young team and we look forward to working with him,” said Embery on his clubs website.

Herne Bay continue with their pre-season preparations with a home game against Bostik Premier Division side Canvey Island tomorrow (15:00).
