Herne Bay announce the departure of player-manager Liam Friend after 39 games in charge at Winch's Field

Wednesday 11th March 2026

HERNE BAY have announced the departure of their player-manager Liam Friend last night.

The 37-year-old centre half was appointed in June 2025 and has also made over 100 appearances for the club as a player.

Friend took charge of 39 games in all competitions and his side picked up 14 wins, eight draws and 17 defeats during his time in the Winch’s Field hotseat.

“I’ve really enjoyed managing Herne Bay FC and I’m proud of the spell we’ve had,” said Friend in a statement.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is putting together a much younger squad that matched last season’s points tally by the end of February – huge credit to the players for that.

“A big thank you to Wynts and Rodgo (Tom Wynter and James Rogers) for the excellent work they put in with the players and to the team behind the team for everything they do.

“Finally, thank you to the fans who were excellent with me throughout.

“I’m keen to get back to it as soon as possible, whether that’s on the pitch or in the dug-out.  Looking forward to what the future holds.”

A club statement added: “Liam was appointed in June 2025 and led the team to some great results and performances.  The club thank Liam for his hard work and contribution to the club and we wish him the best of luck for the future.”

Herne Bay sit in eleventh-place in the Isthmian League South East Division table, having picked up 44 points (12 wins, eight draws and 13 defeats).

The Bay suffered a 4-0 home defeat to their Kent rivals Ashford United last Saturday, which extended the club’s winless streak to six League games.

Herne Bay are currently 18 points adrift of the play-off zone and 15 points clear of the relegation zone in this eighth-tier division.

Herne Bay return to League action with a home tie against relegated bottom side East Grinstead Town on Saturday.

The Wasps have endured a miserable campaign and have picked up only five points (one win, two draws) this season (33 games).
