Greenie's Friday Preview

Friday 08th September 2006

You know when I sit down here that the PC in Greenie Towers and write "THE PREVIEW" I never seem to be able to get a train of thought going and then WHALLOP! Here it comes… and it really does hit the target!

And that dear reader sets the tone (or is it the "corn" for this weeks offering as we start with my assignment for this weeks Saturday Sport (with Matt D back in the chair after his hols!). It’ll be my first chance to see Tony Burman’s high flying Dartford who sit pretty atop Ryman One South with 10 points from their opening 4 League games (matched only by Ian Jenkins’ Cray) and a five goal away day win the FA Cup!

Tomorrow they welcome a Hastings United side to Thurrock for their third "home" game of the season when the club indeed does go home!

November 11 is the all-important date and its difficult for the generation that has been lost to the club to appreciate just how important a Dartford FC ground in Dartford actually is.

It seems daft to me as the reality dawns that in all the years that I’ve been watching Kent Non League football, I’ve never seen a true Dartford home game!

The admiration for all those at the club who have kept it going through the dark years just grows every time I spend an afternoon or evening in their wonderful company! (There that should get me a pint off the Chairman at least tomorrow afternoon) Anyhow back to business and with Hastings rock bottom (get it Hastings – Rock?!?!?) (Never mind!!!) – The darts will be looking to extend their early lead especially as the two sides directly below them meet at Crabble! To see if they do, join me for regular updates on Saturday Sport!

"I don’t know what it is about Cray…" said a rueful Dover boss Clive Walker speaking to me after their 3-0 Cup win over Bracknell Town. Under Ian Jenkins and Joe Francis (Kent’s answer to… well I’m still not sure but somewhere between Clough and Taylor and Morecambe and Wise would be accurate) Cray’s rise has been sensational and they’ve become feared opponents mainly because of their in your face attitude. And that is probably what the Dover boss meant last weekend!

Last season Cray took four points off of the Whites, and what would the visitors to Crabble tomorrow do for a repeat?

It’s going to be an interesting afternoon at Crabble and you know that it could be very tight with few goals… More or less guarantees an end-to-end 7-6 classic doesn’t it???

Maidstone United in seventh start life without Mo Takaloo as they welcome the Met Police to Bourne Park, and I must be honest that of all the top League sides I saw last season I thought the Police were amongst the best.

So with Lloyd Hume acting quickly by bringing in Ray Powell to replace the departed Takaloo it could be one of the games of the weekend!

Ninth placed Chatham Town and tenth placed Sittingbourne both face very tricky away days against two of the sides that spent a lot of last season chasing Play Off places.

Phil Miles takes his Chatham side to sixth placed Leatherhead – a tricky place to go at the best of times, but as the Chats have had a week to reflect on throwing a three goal lead away at Winchester in the FA Cup last week will be the first really big test of Miles’ management career!

Steve Lovell takes his Sittingbourne side to Corydon Athletic who have started the season well and are already fifth.

Lovell senior will be hoping that Lovell junior and the returning Andy Doerr (who missed the Cup win over Thamesmead as he was on his hols!) will be able to get an understanding going that will soon terrorise the rest of the Ryman One defences!

So then six Kent clubs in the Divisions top ten… and where’s the seventh? Well Ashford are currently nineteenth but tomorrow go into battle with Burgess Hill Town at Homelands looking for three wins in three games for the first time in an awful lot longer than anyone can remember…

I saw Burgess Hill lose to Maidstone in the Cup last Sunday and I can assure the Ashford faithful that the visitors will be a tough nut to crack! It though will be a good test of just how far Tim Thorogood’s side has come – a test which I wonder if they’ll come through?

On our way to the Ryman Premier, we’ll call into the Conference where the Fleet have another long road trip North – this weeks its off to Emmerdale country and the New Shay in Halifax – a ground where traditionally they don’t usually do very well.

But after last weekends 2-2 draw at Southport took the unbeaten run to three games, Liam Daish’s charges head North full of confidence.

But lets not forget that the ShayMen were only denied a return to the Football league last season by the Play Off final defeat to Hereford.

Listen to full match commentary on this one courtesy of the BBC Radio Kent website and Phil Kinsella and Chas Webster from just before 3:00!

In Conference South Adie Pennock and Welling welcome Braintree Town to Park View game as the manager is desperate for his charges to find a level of consistency. Three wins and four defeats thus far for the faltering Wings and a remarkable fact is that they have a 100 percent record on matches played on a Saturday afternoon so far this season. A bizarre record that will be put to the test by their eighth placed visitors from deepest darkest Essex!

And so to the Ryman Premier and leaders Margate goes from strength to strength!

Tuesday’s 2-0 win at Walton & Hersham gives Robin Trott’s side a two point lead at the top and takes their great start to five wins and a draw from their six games played.

Tomorrow they head for Hertfordshire to face a Boreham Wood side who themselves have been beaten just one in their opening six games! Problem is that they’ve drawn the other five and go into the game with the leaders looking for their first win of the season! An ideal chance then for Trott’s men to make it six wins out of seven!

Tonbridge Angels will just be happy to get back to winning ways after their great start to the season came to an abrupt halt in the last week. A goal less draw against Walton followed by Tuesdays 2-0 defeat at Staines knocked Tony Dolby’s side off the top of the table as they re acquainted themselves with the Premier League.

Tomorrow Slough Town come to Longmead as the Angels look to put a difficult week behind them – that said they’re still

fourth in the table – an early season return that Im sure Dolby would take if asked! Bill Rice will be at this one for Saturday Sport…

Ramsgate’s 2-0 win on Tuesday over Billericay gave the Rams a boost after their hiccup after their debut in the Premier League took them to twelth in the table, and with Takaloo’s return from Maidstone, and the departure of summer signings Warren Waugh and Ryan Bernard means that Jim Ward really does have once more a home grown squad to choose from.

They face another stern examination over the next few days – tomorrow they welcome East Thurrock United  whilst on Tuesday they play Margate in the League Cup.

Now I wonder just how seriously both sides will take this particular game- local derby; haven’t played each other for a few years; I wonder…

Despite earning a good point against Bromley on Monday, Folkestone Invicta remain rooted to the table’s foot – a position that surely doesn’t do Neil Cugley’s side justice.

But as Cugley himself will testify – results do not lie! And apart from drubbings at Wimbledon and against Margate, Invicta have competed well with all of their other opponents. Lets hope that they can turn things around – starting this weekend when they welcome Leyton (traditionally poor travellers) to Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon.

Its First Qualifying round weekend in the FA Vase and it always brings back such wonderful memories of Roly Graham so gloriously winning the Vase for Deal Town in 2000 – seems like it was only yesterday when Steve Marshall crossed for Roly the Carpenter to volley the ball so gloriously…. Memories that could be repeated this year? Who knows?

Four Kent clubs are involved in first Qualifying Round action; Deal host Eastbourne Town, and Tunbridge Wells welcome East Grinstead whilst League Leaders Faversham and Whitstable go to Eastbourne United and Shoreham respectively.

So there you are then another week previewed – next week we’re back on the FA Cup trail. Don’t forget midweek derbies galore in the Ryman League Cup – enjoy your footie and I’ll speak to you next Friday…

Cheers
Mike Green
