Fraser Franks now has a chance to kick-start his career, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

Tuesday 19th June 2012
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day has today unveiled the signing of defender Fraser Franks.

The 21-year-old started his youth career at Chelsea (1995-2005) and Brentford (2006-2008), before he signed a professional contract at Griffin Park in 2008.

However, opportunities in west London were limited, so he moved to AFC Wimbledon in 2010, where he made 22 appearances (11 more as substitute), scoring two goals for the club.

Day, 32, is delighted that he has fought-off stiff opposition to land the Hammersmith-born defender on a one-year contract.

“Fraser is a decent defender who has League experience and we have tracked for a while and pleased to have signed him.

“We now have three excellent defenders competing for a place in the team.

“Fraser now has a chance to kick-start his career and show people what he is capable of.

“He had a few good offers from teams in Leagues above for more money but he chose to come to us which shows his hunger to develop and it is now also down to me and my staff to achieve that.”

Welling United remain in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South next season after they were defeated 1-0 by their Kent rivals Dartford in the play-off final in May after finishing in third-place after 42 League games.

Meanwhile, rock superstars REM will be appearing at Park View Road on Friday, 21 September.  REMember – one of the UK’s top tribute bands – will be staring at the Kent club and tickets are on sale for just £5.50.
