Fraser Franks deserves to move back into full-time football, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

Friday 17th January 2014
WELLING UNITED central defender Fraser Franks has left the club to sign for their Skrill Premier rivals Luton Town for an undisclosed fee tonight.

The England C defender, 23, who has been a mainstay of the Park View Road defence in the past 18 months, departs with 71 appearances and four goals to his name for the Wings.

Dropping out of the Football League to join Welling United in the summer of 2012, the move represents a return to full-time football for Franks.

Luton were one of two clubs during the January transfer window to activate a clause in Fraser’s contract, which has been there since he joined the Kent club.

Welling United manager Jamie Day told www.wellingunited.com : “Fraser was an important member of our squad and leaves us as a Conference South title winner, England C international and an established player at Skrill Premier level.

“He has been a pleasure to work with and has developed into an England C international during his time with us.

“He has always shown a great attitude in games and training, and deserves to move back into full-time football.

“All the staff wish him the best of luck with his new path and hopefully he develops further.

“We hope that this again shows that Welling is a club that can develop young players and they can move on when they are ready.”

Day confirmed that he is working on a replacement for Franks to his squad and hopes to have a new signing in place by Monday, subject to final paperwork being completed.

Meanwhile, earlier today, Day unveiled the loan signing of attacking midfielder Josh Wakefield, 20, on a one-month loan deal from AFC Bournemouth.

Wakefield has previously been sent out on loan to Wimborne Town, Hamworthy United, Dagenham & Redbridge and Dorchester Town.

The Wings are at home to bitter-rivals Woking tomorrow (3pm), looking to bounce back after becoming the first side to lose to basement side Hyde, who came back from Park View Road with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday night.
