Ford calls upon local support to see them through - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Monday 04th September 2006

VCD Athletic boss Martin Ford has issued a rallying cry to Kent football supporters to flock through the Park View Road turnstiles in their droves to support his injury-hit team during their FA Cup preliminary round replay against Eastbourne Town on Thursday night, writes Stephen McCartney.

Ford is without six key players for the replay against a side that’s tipped to win the Sussex County League this season.

But he calls upon local fans to attend the game, which has been switched to Nationwide Conference South outfit Welling United, a ground that has brought the Vickers plenty of luck recently.

They lifted the Kent Senior Trophy there, beating Tunbridge Wells on penalties in April, and defeated Erith & Belvedere 3-0 more recently on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Lee Coburn (56 days) and Mark Horan (86 days) begin their lengthy suspensions today, but at least Mark Greatorex only serves a seven-day ban. David Hunt is currently nursing a groin injury.

Two players, goalkeeper Grant Wallis (Egypt) and Gary Ward (America) are missing due to holidays.

But Ford revealed he can delve into his big squad for the replay, which if they win, will see them travel to Bashley in the next round on 16 September.

Steve Hogg, Nick Minshull, 17, and striker Stuart Abbott will be drafted into the squad and former Kingstonian goalkeeper Alan Hughes, who signed from Dartford last week, will make his debut.

New signing from Whitstable Town, Paul Smith will be on the bench alongside Mo Miah and sixteen-year-old striker Juan Ramirez, who scored his first goal for the club during their 3-3 draw at Sevenoaks Town towards the end of last season.

But Ford will have two new faces in the side for the trip to local rivals Slade Green on Saturday.

“We’re hopeful of signing a couple of players this week,” Ford revealed in an EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“We can’t divulge who because the paperwork hasn’t come through but they will both be on board against Slade Green.”

With a crowd of over 300 expected at Park View Road on Thursday night, Ford hopes his side’s recent history at that ground will see them through.

“We won the Kent Senior Trophy there and produced a good performance against Erith & Belvedere on Bank Holiday Monday so hopefully it will prove to be lucky for us,” he said.

But the club decided against playing the game at their revamped Oakwood ground in Old Road, Crayford, despite lengthy discussions that lasted until 10pm on Sunday night.

Ford is, however, extremely grateful to Welling United officials for allowing the Kent League side to use their facilities.

“It’s a Thursday night game and VCD are going into the unknown this year,” said Ford.

“We’re hoping at Welling on Thursday night everyone will support a Kent side getting through to the next round of the FA Cup.

“We tried it at Greenwich Borough last season and the crowds were up so all our home (midweek) games will be on a Thursday night.  We’re hopeful Thursday night football will take off at the Oakwood.

"We had long discussions that we were hoping to stage the replay at the Oakwood, but it would meant people would have to work 24-7 to get the game on.

“We made a couple of phone calls and at the end of the day we’re thankful for the people at Welling United for allowing us to use their facilities.”
