Fleet Ladies arrange friendly at Stonebridge Road

Monday 31st July 2006
Women’s football is coming to Stonebridge Road in August, as the Gravesend & Northfleet’s ladies side prepare for their new season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Fleet drew their first game of the season yesterday, with last season’s top scorer Jade McDermott scoring both goals in their 2-2 draw at Enfield Town. Manager Valter Antunes has selected five pre-season games against higher-league sides and the Fleet travel to Gillingham next Sunday (2pm).

Colchester Ladies (13th August, 2pm) and Dagenham & Redbridge (17th August, 6.30pm) then visit Fleet Leisure, Nelson Road to play the Fleet.

But opponents for their final pre-season friendly, at Stonebridge Road on 20th August (2pm) are yet to be confirmed.

It will, however, give fans of the Nationwide Conference club a chance to see their ladies side in action.

Club spokeswoman Tina Martin told www.kentishfootball.co.uk this morning: “The ladies team begun working hard back in June in pre-season training in preparation for the coming season.

“Team manager Valter Antunes has selected some testing matches to prepare for our new league campaign in the London & South East Regional League.

“Over the next month we will face five teams in the friendlies, all from higher placed leagues and we are looking forward to the challenge.

“And with a few new squad additions the ladies team can’t wait for the season to get underway.”

Just like the men, Gillingham and Gravesend & Northfleet are the two highest women’s side’s from the Garden of England.
