FA Trophy Review: Tonbridge Angels equal club scoring record

Sunday 25th November 2007

Bromley, Tonbridge Angels, and hopefully Dover Athletic will join Blue Square Premier side Ebbsfleet United in tomorrow’s FA Carlsberg Trophy first round draw - but Welling United and Maidstone United both suffer defeats to lower league opposition in yesterday’s third qualifying round ties, writes Stephen McCartney.

An injury-hit Bromley side reached the first round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Chippenham Town at Hayes Lane.

Chippenham, who lost 1-0 to Deal Town in the last ever FA Vase final at the old Wembley Stadium in 2000, were defeated courtesy of goals from Gareth Williams and Tutu Henriques.

Former Bromley star winger, Kirk Watts, 28, impressed during his Tonbridge Angels’ debut.

Boss Tommy Warrilow remains undefeated in four games in charge since replacing Tony Dolby in the hot-seat.

The Angels defeated a Burnham side, that’s top of the British Gas Business Division One South & West table, courtesy of Hamid Barr scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Tonbridge Angels also equalled a club record, having scored in every of their last 31 games, and can break that record if they find the target at Ashford Town in Tuesday night’s Kent Senior Cup first round tie at The Homelands.

Blue Square South side Welling United were knocked out, having lost 1-0 at Wealdstone.

The Ryman Premier League side booked their place in the first round proper, courtesy of a goal from former Wings striker Stephen Hughes after 31 minutes.

Maidstone United’s run in the competition, however, has ended like the Wings - going down to ten-man Canvey Island.

The Ryman Premier League Division One North side scored the only goal of a dull game at Bourne Park with just nine minutes remaining through Danny Curran.

Warren McBean gave Blue Square South strugglers Sutton United the lead after half-an-hour at Crabble SeaFrance Stadium against Ryman League Division One South leaders Dover Athletic.

But the Kent side levelled proceedings fourteen minutes into the second half when Craig Cloke got the decisive touch following a corner, to earn a replay at Sutton’s Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night.

That mean’s Kingstonian league visit to Crabble SeaFrance Stadium on Monday night has been postponed.

The third qualifying round winners all bank £3,000 each in FA Prize Money and go into Monday morning’s first round draw.

First round ties take place on Saturday 15th December, with £4,000 each up for grabs for the winners.
