Fans assist Margate with ground improvements

Tuesday 23rd May 2006

Margate fans are pulling together to help the Ryman Premier League club build a terrace at the “Coffin End” of their ground at Hartsdown Park, writes Stephen McCartney.

Having moved back to their stadium last August, the far end of the ground was open to the elements and had no terracing.

But that could change with the help of the Margate faithful.

One supporter wrote on their fans’ forum: “As you know the standing area at the open end lacks a roof,” he said.

“The open end lacks any kind of terracing, making viewing difficult to say the least, but there is something we can do about that though.”

Fans have had talks with the club about the situation, although Margate cannot at this time afford the cost of professionals to do the job, there is enough ballast and fill down that end of the ground to build a terrace.

“The club has no objection if we the supporters organise the construction and provide the labour,” said the supporter.

“We would need to bring our own tools, our own barrows and a concrete mixer if anyone has one.

“If you have the time to spare please post your interest on the fans’ forum (you can get there via www.margate-fc.com ) and we will get back with more specific dates and times.

“This will make for a more pleasant afternoon for us the spectators as we watch our beloved Blues.”

Meanwhile, back on the pitch, player-manager Robin Trott has told Bertie Brayley that he does not form part of his plans for this coming season and the midfielder has been placed on the transfer list.

Trott has also released John Keister from the squad. The 35-year-old, who has been with the club since March 2001, has been a dedicated servant to the club.

He has signed a one-year contract with Ryman League Division One South neighbours Dover Athletic.
