Erith & Belvedere unveil the signing of John Wilfort

Sunday 27th June 2010
ERITH & BELVEDERE manager Micky Collins has today unveiled his fourth summer signing with the capture of the vastly experienced John Wilfort, writes Stephen McCartney.

Wilfort, who turns 32 in September, is a versatile player who, at just over 6 feet tall, can play at centre back, right-back or in midfield.

He started his career at Tottenham Hotspur before moving on to enjoy successful spells at Conference South and Ryman Premier League level with Welling United, Maidstone United, Bromley (where he suffered a very bad leg break) and Tonbridge Angels.

He has also seen Ryman Division One action with the likes of Chatham Town, Chipstead, Dulwich Hamlet and Tooting & Mitcham United, among others.

Speaking after John had put pen to paper at Park View Road, Collins expressed his delight at securing the multitalented player’s services.

“John is a great signing as he brings great experience and versatility to the club,” Collins told www.erithandbelvederefc.co.uk.

“We have played together at Tonbridge Angels and Chipstead and we also worked together with Mark Tompkins at Erith Town.

“He is a great character to have around the changing room he will also help the younger players to settle quickly into the squad.

“I am really looking forward to working with him again and wish him every success at the club”.

Wilfort is also looking forward to working with Collins again.

“After it was announced that Micky was the new manager of Erith and Belvedere FC, I knew that I wanted to be part of it,” he said.

“Not only have we been team mates before but we are also good friends off the park. I know with him and the coaching team he has put together, it will be a really professional outfit and I can’t wait to start pre-season.”

And with pre-season training getting under way next week, Collins outlined his future plans.

“Our pre-season training starts next Saturday 3rd July where we will begin looking to fill the remaining places in the squad,” he said.

“We are aware that competition for places will be tough, however, we have organised some quality friendlies against higher opposition that will test everyone and give us ample opportunity to see every player in action.”

The first of those pre-season fixtures will soon be upon us as we kick off the new season on Saturday 17 July with the visit to Park View Road of Maidstone United.

Collins, who is preparing for his first season in charge of the Deres, has already snapped up Richard Stroud (goalkeeper), James Lyons (midfielder) and Danny Powell (striker).

The club, based at Park View Road, Welling, will be hopeful for a much better campaign in the Kent League next term, having finished fifth-from-bottom in what was a miserable season for a club of this stature.
