Emily Sawyer makes the tough decision to step away from football permanently due to personal reasons

EMILY SAWYER has decided to step away from football due to personal reasons.

The Irish-born ‘physio’ has worked for a number of locally based non-league football clubs over the years – but has decided to hang up her treatment bag and close her clinic and will be a big loss to the game.

“I’m sorry for my radio silence these past few months. I have not been in the best place, personally,” said Sawyer in a statement posted on social media yesterday.

“In the later part of the summer, I lost my work space and shortly after I was replaced by the team I work for (VCD Athletic), while I bounce back a lot of the time, this time, I couldn’t.

“I have made the decision, after 15, long, mostly enjoyable years to close my clinic.

“I’m very sad as you, my clients, are so amazing. I’ve been blessed with the best. But I feel I can’t give you the best of me or the treatments you deserve.

“I am stepping away from football permanently too.  Again, a tough decision for me but definitely the best for my mental health.

“A huge thank you from me for your unwavering support through the years, especially during the uncertainty of covid and lock down.

“I’ve made some amazing friends through my clinic and met some genuinely great people. I feel blessed.  Look after yourselves.”

Sawyer’s last club was Isthmian League South East Division side VCD Athletic.

Sawyer’s medical expertise was called into action during a FA Vase tie in February, when left-back Tom Carlse (who is now part of the coaching staff at the Crayford-based club) suffered a career ending injury.
