We know there are some very strong sides at the top of the division and we are doing our best to stay in touch with them, says Deal Town head coach Steve King

DEAL TOWN head coach Steve King says his side came off second best during their shock 3-0 defeat at Fisher last weekend.

Derek Hares' side are now in fifth-place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table with 28 points from 13 games, five points adrift of second-placed side Chatham Town, after their defeat close to the banks of the River Thames.

“It was a disappointing result last week at Fisher where we failed to reach the standards we have set recently,” said King.

“We uncharacteristically conceded a couple of sloppy goals and despite having a number of good chances at the start of the second half, we ended up coming off second best.

“It was our first defeat in 11 so we will dust ourselves down and look forward to getting back out there this weekend.”

Deal Town welcome a Welling Town side in the bottom five, having collected eight points from their opening 12 games.

The Dartford-based club are now managed by Darren Manning, who has lost four of his six games in charge since taking over from chairman Kevin Oakes in the dug-out.

King said: “We are expecting a tough game against a Welling Town side who have recently appointed a new manager, who had previously experienced success at Step Five.

“Since our opposition have joined the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division we have had some tough games against them and we expect tomorrow to be no different.

“Having said that, our home form has been excellent recently and we know if we can get to the levels we have set then it is a game we are looking to win.

“We have players back who were missing last week and have a strong squad available, so we are all looking forward to it.”

When asked to reflect on Deal Town’s league position, King replied: “We are really pleased with our points total so far and are ahead of the targets that we set ourselves at the start of the season.

“We know there are some very strong sides at the top of the division and we are doing our best to stay in touch with them.

“Usually, an average of two points a game would put you close to the top of the league but to be much higher in the league this year with the strength of the top teams, we have a run of home games coming up now so we will be looking to take advantage of that and continue our good start to the season.”
