Darren Phillips picks nineteen players to carry the Kent flag against rivals Sussex

Wednesday 27th February 2013
DARREN PHILLIPS has named his nineteen-man squad that will represent the Haart of Kent County League against the Sussex County League on Saturday.

The side played a couple of friendlies against Haart of Kent County League Division One sides during the past week, beating Otford United 2-1, before going down to a 3-1 defeat to University of Kent on Monday night.

Phillips, who previously managed Charlton Athletic (Community) and now manages the reserve team at Ryman League Division One North Chatham Town, has named two goalkeepers, six defenders, seven midfielders and four strikers for the game at Chatham Town.

Phillips says he is looking forward to his ninth game in charge of the side as they lock horns with Sussex in The FA Inter-League Cup Preliminary Round.

”Pretty much every time you play probably seven or eight new people,” said Phillips.

”Metrogas players have been ruled out because they’ve got a London Cup fixture which can’t be cancelled so that’s ruled out five players in one go but the boys have come in, done a job and they’ve taken their opportunity.”

Phillips added: ”The National Cup comes around every two years and because the Cup runs over two seasons. I might not get the same boys the next season who played for you this year.

”When I started Bromley Green won the Premier Division, four or five of their boys’ went to Lydd so they were illegible and that is the problem really.  You don’t know whose going to be at a club one minute to the next.

”I don’t know when the First Round proper will be. It might be next season so we don’t know who will be there.  That’s the problem you don’t know what players will be at what clubs.”

When asked what he is expecting against their neighbours, Phillips said: ”We played them once before, we drew them two-all down there and we beat them on penalties in a Cup competition between the two counties.

”Their set-up’s a bit different. They pick players from their third division, which is the same sort of standard. They pick players from a lower division on paper but I think it’s the same standard as step seven.

”I should imagine they’re in the same boat as us.   They don’t train or anything like that.”

Phillips hopes his side take advantage of being at home.

He said:  ”The game’s at Chatham, so it’s at home. It’s a bonus.  It will be well advertised.  I picked Chatham due to obvious reasons. I know everyone down there.

”The option was to play on a Saturday because of work commitments during the week.

”The teams who have players’ selected will have their games postponed so they’re not going to miss out on any players.  Chatham reserves haven’t got a game so it’s fitted in nicely for everyone.”
