Cumberbatch: We must finish off the job - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Monday 09th October 2006

Ashford Town will travel to near neighbours Hastings United in the first qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy on 21 October, but first they must end their four game winless run and beat Waltham Forest at the Homelands on Tuesday night, writes Stephen McCartney.

Ashford earned a replay following their 1-1 draw in Walthamstow on Saturday, and joint-manager John Cumberbatch, whose son Marc netted Ashford’s goal to score his first goal of the season, wants his side to emulate their impressive first half performance to see of the Londoners.

“We were very good first half, second half not so good,” Cumberbatch said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk on the eve of the replay, that will be settled on the night.

“First half we looked so superior to them and going only 1-0 ahead we was very disappointed, but pleased with the way we were playing.”

But Ashford’s hopes of progressing were halted when Victor Renner drove home Forest’s second half leveller.

“We did say at half-time they would change their formation and that they would be more fired up because we heard their manager screaming at them,” said Cumberbatch.

“We went into our shell, which is a problem we have. They came out more determined and we withdrew into our shell.

“Having said that they didn’t create many chances but their goal was a superb strike.”

But Cumberbatch demands that his side wins tomorrow night to set a lucrative trip to Hastings in the next round.

“We’ve got to start tomorrow night exactly the same way as we started there,” he said.

“We know the opposition, they have a lot of good individuals but they are not organised as a side.

“Given the fact that they have a new manager, they are trying to gel together and we’ve got to take advantage of that.

“It’s important for our confidence that we win and go into the next league game having won tomorrow night.”

Ashford are without a game on Saturday due to Leatherhead’s FA Cup exploits, so the players will be put through their paces on the training ground before their next Ryman League Division One South outing, at Maidstone United (Bourne Park, Sittingbourne), on Wednesday 18 October.

Speaking about his plans for the weekend, Cumberbatch added: “We will have a training session. It will not be a day off. We are not playing well enough to have a day off Saturday.”

Stuart Playford (work commitments) has left the club but Scottish defender Barry Crawford is nursing an ankle injury.
