We are confident we can cause an upset and progress in the competition, says Corinthian boss Michael Golding

CORINTHIAN manager Michael Golding says he is plotting an upset in The Buildbase FA Vase Third Round on Sunday.

Golding takes his side to play Sutton Common Rovers at Gander Green Lane, the artificial pitch of Vanarama National League Sutton United.

The hosts go into this weekend sitting in the bottom five in the Combined Counties League Premier Division and Corinthian’s management team cast their eye on their opponents after watching their impressive 5-1 home win over Camberley Town last Monday.

“Really looking forward to the game on Sunday,” said Golding.

“It gives us a chance to test ourselves against a Sutton Common Rovers side in good form at the moment, who have lost one of their last five games and have also scored 10 in their last two games.

“We travelled to watch them on Monday and were really impressed with them, particularly the forward players whose movement and link up play caused Camberley a lot of problems, so we know we will need to be aware of that if we are to gain a positive result.

“Having said that we have spent the rest of the week formulating a game plan, which we feel can cause Sutton problems and if our players execute this as we know they can, we are confident we can cause an upset and progress in the competition.”

Reflecting on their last two games, Corinthian lost 4-1 at Ashford United in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup Second Round, but they bounced back with a 7-0 home win over Division One side Orpington in the Macron Southern Counties East Football League Challenge Cup.

“We also head into the game in relatively good form, with the defeat to Ashford our only blemish in the past eight matches,” added Golding.

“Ashford fully deserved the win last week and I felt they were the strongest and most complete Ashford side we have played over the past couple of years. We had a couple of key players missing, however they were too strong for us on the day.

“We bounced back from the Ashford disappointment with a resounding victory over Orpington midweek. A purposeful start to the game saw us go 3-0 up within the first 15 minutes and this effectively put the game to bed as a contest.

“The performance throughout was pleasing, not only did we score some high-quality goals, we managed to keep another clean sheet and also managed to rotate the squad slightly to give some players minutes who haven't featured a great deal recently, whilst also giving others a much needed rest.”

When asked about team news going into Sunday’s game, Golding kept his cards closed to his chest.
