Cordice: Everyone will get a chance

Wednesday 28th June 2006
Terry Cordice has hung up his boots again, but Faversham Town fans will not be surprised to learn he is KEEPING something up his sleeve, writes James Brown.

For the former Dover Athletic star, who made nine appearances in defence for Town last season, is looking forward to playing in GOAL. Cordice, who still refuses to reveal his age, stunned the players last season by donning goalie gloves and leaping all over the place during training.

And after calling time on his Faversham Town playing career for a second time this week he confused the issue by insisting he fancied the No 1 shirt.

Cordice claimed his days as a player were over at the start of last season - and he is using the same line again this summer.

But he is refusing to rule out a stint in goal should the need arise, revealing: "Yep, that's it for me now as a player. I filled in for a while last season but this is the Kent League now and I am not expecting to play this time.

"However, I could be dragged out of retirement to play in goal. The lads know I can do a job there. No one could get past me in training last season!"

Cordice was speaking after Faversham Town's first pre-season training session where 27 players were put through their paces at the Abbey School.

And Cordice, never one to be short on confidence, added with a grin: "I joined in with the lads and was quality - there is no doubt about that.

"But like I say, that's it for me as an outfield player. The only position you might see me next season is in goal."

Assistant manager Peter Holder put the players through their paces and Cordice was pleased with the turn-out.

He said: "We had 27 lads along which was a decent number for a first session.

"There were some old faces there as well as some new and I also know of several others who could not make it because of holidays or work.

"That's always the way at this time of year but already I am really very positive about the new season."

Cordice confirmed that Graham Taylor would be making an appearance at pre-season training despite missing the first session because of work commitments.

Taylor scored twice on his one and only appearance for Faversham Town last season on loan from Ramsgate.

And Cordice is now hoping the tall striker will fill the void left by last season's top scorer Ross Cable who has left the club.

He said: "Yes, Graham will be coming down and we are hoping that he enjoys being back at the Town. He could be a key player for us next season but we are keeping an open mind at this stage.

"Everyone will get a chance to prove they are worthy of a place in the first team next season and I'd like to repeat my earlier invitation for players to turn up and try out for our teams.

"I'd also like to thank the Abbey School for allowing us to use their playing field. Important work is going on at Salters Lane so we are very grateful for the use of an alternative venue."

The loss of the mercurial Cable is a massive blow to the Salters Lane club but Cordice is not about to lose any sleep over the issue.

Ross Cable's brother Rikki, the club's second highest scorer last season, is also believed to have left but Cordice revealed:  "We now know that Ross is not coming back and that is his decision, but I am not yet convinced that Rikki will go too.

"We are not about to start chasing either player but it is my belief that Rikki could yet sign for us in the Kent League."

Pre-season training continues on Thursday night with the squad meeting at Salters Lane at 7pm.

Meanwhile, time is running out to enter the 2006 Bob Mason Classic with more than 100 golfers teeing it up at Boughton Golf Club on Friday, 28th July.

The deadline for the third annual event, which comprises an 18-hole Stableford followed by a nine-hole Texas Scramble, is noon on Friday, 7th July.
