Cordice: Beckenham represents a big challenge for us

Tuesday 29th August 2006

Terry Cordice believes his new-look defence can snuff out the threat of former Faversham Town goal hero Ross Cable at Beckenham Town on Saturday, writes James Brown.

The Faversham Town boss knows all about the tricky striker who became a crowd favourite at Salters Lane with 11 goals in 19 appearances last season including five as a substitute.

Cable signed for ambitious Beckenham this summer and has already scored SIX GOALS in just FOUR GAMES for the South Londoners who top the Premier Division on goal difference from two other teams including the Lilywhites who are third.

But Cordice insists the elder of the two Cable brothers will hold no fears for in-form Faversham Town who claimed six points out of six over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Salters Lane club are flying on the back of three successive wins and Cordice said: "Beckenham represents a big challenge for the lads. It's a great game to be looking forward to.

"Like us, they have had three wins and a defeat and Ross has been among the goals including a late winner over Deal Town and two against Croydon on Monday.

"Playing against one of your old team-mates is bound to be a motivating factor for the lads but we'll go there with a game plan and see how it goes.

"To be fair, I don't think Ross will get much change out of our defence at the moment. They have been playing very well and were rock solid against Lordswood on Monday."

Cable, whose brother Rikki has also been among the goals for his new side Thamesmead, is looking forward to welcoming Faversham Town to Eden Park Avenue.

He said: "I'm glad to see that Faversham Town have made a winning start to life in the Kent League. They have had some good results already which is good to see. Well done to all the lads.

"It should be a good game on Saturday - the pitch at Beckenham is like a carpet."

Cordice was delighted to see 219 supporters flock to Salters Lane for Monday's 1-0 win over Lordswood and is hoping they will now decide to travel away with the Lilywhites.

He said: "I'd like to think we put on a decent show for the fans on Monday. They really do make a difference - all the lads say so.

"We cannot thank them enough for their support and I'm now hoping they will start to watch us away.

"I know it may be difficult for some but most of the games can be reached in less than an hour and the 50 or so we had roaring us on at Herne Bay were just tremendous.

"The club assure me that if there is sufficient demand they will put on coaches to all away games. One has already been organised to take us down to Eastbourne on Saturday week and I'd urge the fans to sign up.

"It'll be a great day out and a good opportunity for us to get to know more of them. After all, they're very much part of our squad."
